Beijing, September 13 (Xinhua) Tesla's head of investor relations, Martin Viecha, spoke at the invitation-only Goldman Sachs technology conference on Monday, local time, explaining to many investors Tesla's development direction in the next five years. From emphasizing the potential of falling car manufacturing costs to looking forward to the future of Tesla's fully autonomous driving software (FSD), at the end, he also mentioned the development of robotaxi services.

Viecha stressed that the manufacturing cost of each Tesla electric vehicle is a key indicator in the next few years, as it determines the company's car production capacity and future development. In 2017, Tesla cost $84000 to make each car. In recent quarters, the price of each car has fallen to $36000. The price drop is not due to lower battery costs, but rather because Tesla benefits from better vehicle design, faster manufacturing processes, and new factory designs.

Viecha added that Tesla's superfactory in Fremont, Calif., accounts for about half of Tesla's output, but it is not a suitable place to make cars, and superfactories, including Shanghai and Berlin, are cheaper. As the car production capacity and delivery capacity of the new plant increases, the cost of making cars will be less than $36000, so does Tesla's profitability, Viecha said.

The company hopes to continue this development trajectory and break through the cost limit of producing electric vehicles.

The Tesla executive believes that in the 120-year-old auto industry, there have been only two major revolutions in manufacturing. One is the emergence of the Ford Model T, and the other is the "lean production" model created by Toyota in the 1970s.

"the architecture of electric vehicles is very different from that of internal combustion engines, which will allow a third revolution in car manufacturing," Viecha said.

The discussion then moved to Tesla's fully automated driving (FSD) software service. At present, about 100000 people use the "supervised" FSD on the streets of American cities, and drivers can intervene in the driving process. He predicts that according to Tesla's available data, the supervised FSD may be extended to cover all Tesla's US car owners by the end of this year.

However, he also stressed that this is "supervisory autonomy" and drivers should still pay attention to it, otherwise they may lose access to the service.

Faced with the controversy over FSD in the US, the executive wants Tesla to collect more data from the intervention and launch software updates to improve the system. He added that this iterative process will eventually enable Tesla to achieve full autonomy.

"We are convinced that massive data collection and artificial intelligence are the only way to solve the problem, and that's the way we're going," Viecha said.

Finally, he described Model X and S as Tesla's first-generation platforms. Model 3 and Model Y are the second generation, while the robotaxi (driverless taxi) platform will be the third generation. Tesla needs to offer cheaper cars before the self-driving taxi service run by his company is launched.

At Tesla's first-quarter earnings meeting this year, Musk confirmed that the company's Robotaxi model will be designed without a steering wheel or pedal and is expected to be in mass production by 2024.
