Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, September 13 (Xinhua)-- NASA had planned to launch Artemis 1 on September 23 or September 27, which will use the Space launch system (SLS) large rocket to launch the Orion capsule into lunar orbit for an unmanned test flight. But the agency announced in a blog post on Monday night that September 23 is no longer applicable and that the goal is to launch Artemis 1 on September 27, with a possible backup date of October 2.
NASA first attempted a mission on August 29, but was hampered by an abnormal temperature reading in the SLS's first-stage RS-25 engine. The task force quickly traced back to a faulty temperature sensor and asked SLS and Orion to try again on September 3.
However, NASA announced again on September 3 that the launch of SLS, which was scheduled to launch that day, had been cancelled due to a fuel leak. The leak occurred at a "quick disconnect", an interface connecting the SLS core stage to the propellant pipeline from the rocket's mobile launch tower. The Artemis 1 team replaced two seals around the quick disconnect device last week and completed other repairs related to the problem over the weekend, NASA wrote in an update.
NASA is now preparing to conduct a SLS fuel test, which will pump cryogenic propellant into SLS to confirm that the leak has indeed been repaired. The agency had planned to conduct the test on September 17, but has now been postponed to no earlier than September 21.
"the updated dates represent careful consideration of a number of logistical issues, including the added value of having more time to prepare for cryogenic demonstration tests and more time later to prepare for launch," NASA officials wrote in a blog post on Monday. "these dates also allow managers to ensure that the team has adequate rest time and replenish the supply of cryogenic propellants."
CTOnews.com learned that Artemis is the new US moon landing program, named after the Greek moon goddess Artemis, to echo the "Apollo" moon landing program from the 1960s to the early 1970s, while implying that the new plan includes the first female astronaut to land on the moon. In 2019, Artemis was officially launched, carrying the Orion spacecraft through SLS, to send American astronauts to the moon by 2024 and to establish a permanent base on the lunar surface by 2028, laying the foundation for landing on Mars and deep space exploration missions. At the heart of the Artemis program, the development of the SLS and Orion spacecraft took more than 10 years and cost $37 billion. Before the astronauts land on the moon, NASA will test the unmanned flight of Artemis 1 and the manned flight of Artemis 2 around the moon.
