Dell says PC computer supply chain returns to normal, Hewlett-Packard CEO says it will have a price war soon

Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, September 12 (Xinhua)-- after 30 months of disruption caused by the epidemic, the supply chain of PC personal computers has returned to normal-the head of the purchasing team of big companies no longer has to worry.

Or rather, Dell has expressed its view of supply chain recovery and has grown rapidly by making orderable desktops and laptops and selling them directly to customers.

"there are always some problems in this chain, but overall, from our point of view, it operates more like a historical normal," said Tom Sweet, Dell's chief financial officer.

A sharp drop in consumer demand for computers and a decline in the average selling price of some components as their availability increases also helped. Dell said it was working to reduce inventory before it could benefit from these lower costs.

CTOnews.com learned that chip delivery times accelerated slightly in August, although power management, microcontrollers and optoelectronic devices were still relatively scarce, according to Susquehanna International data.

The strong performance of Dell's commercial PC client business has driven the development of its division. As for rival Hewlett-Packard, it shipped more equipment through retailers and felt pressure in the third quarter to the end of June 2022.

Speaking at Evercore ISI's annual technology conference, HP CEO Enrique Lores said the company had experienced a "large backlog of inventory through channels" in the most recent quarter, indicating that pressure on the supply chain was changing.

"traditionally, when this happens, the market becomes more aggressive in pricing because it is to reduce inventories. We think this will have an impact in the short term, and we expect high inventory price competition to be more intense, especially as some of our competitors have large inventories."

Lores added: "given the preferential pricing of [PC suppliers] over the past few years, we expect pricing to be rationalized over time."

A week ago, IDC predicted a decline in the PC market, mainly because consumers were worried about how they would pay their household bills and less discretionary spending. IDC says the market will still be bigger in 2022 than it was before the outbreak, and there is some hope that Windows 11 will drive PC updates for large enterprises.

One of the areas of hardware that has not returned to normal is servers, although Dell expects component availability to be mitigated in the next three to six months.

At Citi's 2020 global technology conference this week, Dell boss Michael Dell said its infrastructure challenge "is not over yet. But I hope it will be over soon. We still have shortages at some nodes, and some types of chips are harder to obtain and take longer to deliver."

The lesson some technology brands learned during the epidemic, he says, is how important it is to retain manufacturing elements.

"when many companies outsource to manufacturing, they decide to outsource the management of components to fine-grained management. maybe they keep the management of some large components. We have never done this, but it would be a big mistake because there will be problems in any part of the supply chain."
