The fault was repaired at 10:42 that night. Voice calls and short message services (SMS), including emergency calls such as 119s, are difficult to use at the moment.

KDDI said it would investigate the cause of the failure and the number of users affected. In early July this year, KDDI also suffered a communication failure, affecting at least 30.91 million people.

CTOnews.com learned that at about 21:13 local time on August 24, au, povo, UQ mobile and other communications services owned by Japanese telecom operator KDDI also had failures in which voice calls were difficult or unable to get through.

As of March this year, KDDI infrastructure had about 62 million mobile subscribers, of which individual contract users under the au, UQ Mobile and povo brands accounted for about 31 million.

KDDI, Japan's second-largest mobile operator, broke down nationwide on July 2.

According to an investigation report released by Japan's Ministry of General Affairs, the communication failure on July 2 lasted 61 hours and 25 minutes, affecting more than 30.91 million people, surpassing the Softbank Corp. communication failure incident in 2018 and becoming the largest failure in Japanese history.
