Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, September 11 (Xinhua)-- North American operator Comcast plans to extend 2 Gigs bandwidth to 34 cities across the United States by the end of this year and expand its coverage to more than 50 million households by the end of 2025, making it the largest and fastest multi-gigabit Internet deployment in U.S. History.
As part of this plan, Comcast is accelerating the transformation of its network to 10G and DOCSIS 4.0 cloud virtualization architecture, and Comcast will start providing multi-gigabit symmetric services supporting 10G in 2023.
In its latest press release, the company announced that it had begun rolling out 2Gbps packages through its broadband network in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Augusta, Georgia, Panama City Beach, Florida, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, without the need to upgrade the modem.
Comcast says users in these cities can already enjoy upload speeds five to 10 times faster than current broadband. The upload speed can reach up to 200Mbps. In addition, Comcast plans to upgrade its upload speed to a higher speed next year, which will bring download and upload equivalent 2000Mbps speed, or Gigabit 2x service.
According to reports, although the optical fiber network is expected to achieve upload and download symmetry, but cable television has lagged behind in this respect. With DOCSIS 4.0, a high-bandwidth broadband standard that allows downloads of 10Gbps and upload rates of 6Gbps, ISP such as Comcast can connect uplink and downlink symmetrically through data lines.
CTOnews.com learned that Comcast is currently transitioning to the new standard, having achieved symmetrical upload and download speeds for 4Gbps in a web test in January.
Although companies like AT&T, Frontier, Verizon and Google are expanding their fiber-optic networks, the service is still largely limited to users in metropolitan areas. For those who need faster connections, they are probably not in areas where fiber optics are available.
Elad Navhi, executive vice president of Comcast Cable, said that once Comcast launches uplink and downlink symmetrical services next year, users will need to upgrade their modems.
