CTOnews.com, September 9 (Xinhua)-- according to Counterpoint research, global electric vehicle sales of Q2 increased 61% in 2022 compared with the same period last year; BYD leads the market. Global sales of Q2 electric vehicles (EV) reached 2.18 million in 2022. BYD surpassed Tesla to become the world's best-selling electric car brand. In 2022, the top 10 electric vehicles accounted for more than 30% of global electric vehicle sales.

According to the latest research from Counterpoint's global electric vehicle sales tracking report, Q2 global electric vehicle (EV) sales rose 61% year-on-year to 2.18 million units in 2022. Of the total sales of electric vehicles, pure electric vehicles (BEV) account for about 72%, and the rest are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). China remains the market leader in electric vehicle sales, followed by Europe and the United States. Sales of Q2 electric vehicles in China rose nearly 92 per cent year-on-year to 1.24 million in 2022, compared with 640000 in 2021.

Market performance Summary BYD Automobile: BYD became the best-selling electric car brand for the first time, overthrowing the dominant position of Tesla. Q2 BYD shipped more than 354000 cars in 2022, an increase of 266 per cent over the same period last year. BYD officially stopped production and sales of internal combustion engine cars in March 2022 and focused on developing BEV and PHEV instead. More than 60% of BYD's car sales this quarter come from its top three models, namely, BYD Song, BYD Han and BYD Qin. The company is slowly infiltrating the European market and is already doing business in Norway and plans to develop related industries in Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands.

Tesla: Tesla's global sales of Q2 in 2022 exceeded 254000 vehicles, an increase of 27% over the same period last year, which was lower than expected. Although Tesla's business in the US has increased, its business in China has been affected by city controls. Tesla sold only 98000 cars in China in Q2 in 2022. Cumulative sales in China fell 49 per cent between April and May compared with the same period a year earlier, the lowest level since Tesla's outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020. But its sales rose nearly 115% in June from a year earlier. Although the COVID-19 epidemic has cast a shadow over Tesla's Q2 sales performance, it is still the global leader in the BEV field.

Wuling: the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV is the best-selling electric vehicle in China, and the joint venture between SAIC, GM and Wuling is undoubtedly successful. The model has been the undisputed market leader since its launch in the second half of 2020. In 2022, Q2 and Wuling increased by 16% year-on-year, ranking third in the global electric vehicle market.

BMW: BMW's electric car sales of Q2 increased by 18% in 2022 compared with the same period last year. The company has a more prominent performance in the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) market segment. However, sales of BMW's pure electric vehicles (BEV) had a higher quarterly growth rate of 18 per cent in Q2 in 2022 than PHEV sales (2 per cent). BMW aims to have 2 million BEV on the road by the end of 2025, a goal that has prompted BMW to make great strides in the field of electric vehicles. BMW's X3 and I series models are leading the company's development in BEV, while 5-Series, 3-Series and X5 models have the same performance in PHEV.

Volkswagen: Q2 in 2022, Volkswagen's electric vehicle sales fell 9% from a year earlier. Its shipments in Europe and the United States fell 44% and 74% respectively from a year earlier. The decline in sales in both markets was affected by the war between Russia and Ukraine, the supply of semiconductors and other auto parts, and rising inflation. However, in 2022 Q2, sales in China increased by 115% compared with the same period last year. In addition to the supply chain crisis, the company's internal problems and failure to develop new proprietary software for its vehicles have also affected the company's targets for electric vehicle shipments.

CTOnews.com learned that the top 10 electric vehicles in Q2 in 2022 accounted for more than 30 per cent of global electric vehicle sales. Tesla's Model Y is still the best-selling electric car. Wuling Hongguang's Mini EV rose to second place, pushing Tesla's Model 3 to third place. In June 2022, Wuling Hongguang Mini EV's long-standing position as the best-selling model in China was broken by Model Y. Six of the top 10 best-selling electric vehicles this quarter are from Chinese brands, and most of them are sold only in China.

"the auto industry is unlikely to fully recover from semiconductor shortages before 2023," Counterpoint said. "given the COVID-19 epidemic, power crisis shutdowns, parts shortages and rising consumer prices, we do not expect global passenger electric vehicle sales to exceed 10 million in 2022."

* sales here refer to wholesale data, that is, the delivery of brands / companies from the factory.

* when it comes to electric vehicles (EV), only pure electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) are considered. Hybrid vehicles and fuel cell vehicles (FCV) are not included in this study.
