The code says: "face unlocking works best when there is plenty of light and you are not wearing a mask and dark glasses." Among them, "plenty of light" means that the face unlocking function may only be based on the camera, rather than the face recognition based on infrared camera and Soli sensor used in Pixel 4.

According to the report, the face unlocking code found was named "Traffic Light (Traffic Light)" and was found only on Pixel 6 Pro running Android 13 QPR1 Beta 1, but not on Pixel 6 and Pixel 6a, which means that only Pixel 6 Pro may support face unlocking, and the feature is expected to be updated after the release of the Pixel 7 / Pro series of phones.

It is reported that the front camera of the Pixel 6 Pro supports dual-pixel autofocus (DPAF), while the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6a do not, which may be the reason why only the Pixel 6 Pro supports face unlocking.

CTOnews.com learned that in Pixel 4, Google gave up support for fingerprint unlocking in favor of face unlocking. This feature is supported by Pixel 4's built-in Soli sensor. At the same time, the Pixel 4 has two infrared cameras that can see the shape of a person's face, rather than relying solely on the front camera to recognize flat images. On Pixel 5 and Pixel 6, Google abandoned Soli sensors and switched to fingerprint sensors.
