BYD is selling very well in China, but did you know that it is rapidly winning the global market?

BYD sold 175000 vehicles in August, up 185% from a year earlier, and BYD sold more than 100000 units for four months in a row, according to the Federation of passengers. From January to August this year, BYD's cumulative sales of new cars reached 979397, an increase of 166.9% and close to 1 million.

While domestic sales are rising, BYD is also rapidly promoting its own process of globalization.

Overseas market layout of ▲ BYD passenger cars

Up to now, BYD has carried out passenger car business in Asia, Europe, America and other regions, and sold well in many developed countries. It can be said that BYD's passenger cars are poorly sold to the North and South Pole and Africa.

Among them, BYD yuan PLUS overseas version of the model Atto 3 has been listed in Australia, Singapore and other markets, and won the first battle. In the Australian market, for example, when BYD Atto 3 was displayed in a showroom in Brisbane, Australia, in early August, hundreds of people lined up to see the car.

In Singapore, the Atto 3 received hundreds of offers before it went on sale, and the popularity of the vehicles exceeded BYD's expectations, requiring more exports to Singapore at one point.

So which overseas markets does BYD enter and which models are sold locally? What is the sales situation abroad? can it compete head-on with Tesla?

01. At present, BYD's passenger cars have been listed in Norway, Australia, Singapore and other developed countries; at the same time, BYD has also set up a passenger car business in Latin America.

According to public information, BYD's passenger car business abroad is almost always in cooperation with well-known local car dealers, and the store distribution network is also constantly expanding.

In the Asian market, BYD announced its foray into Thailand and announced that it would work with dealers to build 31 stores by the end of the year and 70 by 2023.

A few days ago, BYD also announced that it will build an electric car factory in Thailand, which is expected to start operation in 2024, with an annual production capacity of about 150000 vehicles. The cars will be put into Thailand's home market, while radiating neighboring ASEAN countries and other regions.

In the European market, BYD has expanded to Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and other countries in the original Norwegian market, and its models will include BYD Tang, Han, and Yuan PLUS (locally named BYD Atto 3).

At present, BYD has established a partnership with the European dealer group Hedin Mobility and opened showrooms in several local regions to provide electric vehicles to customers in Sweden and Germany. The first BYD models are expected to be delivered to European customers in the fourth quarter of this year.

It is worth noting that BYD has opened 51 retail and display stores in Norway alone.

In the Australian market, BYD has a total of 12 exhibition centers, covering all the states and territories of Australia (except overseas islands).

In the Latin American market, BYD officially entered the Brazilian pure electric passenger car market in December 2021. At present, BYD mainly sells BYD Tang EV and Han EV, and cooperates with local dealers such as Eurobike, Saga and Servopa. BYD is expected to work with Brazilian dealers to cover 45 major cities in Brazil by the end of this year, and plans to have 100 designated dealers by the end of 2023.

In addition, BYD has passenger car operations in Latin America and the Caribbean, including Colombia, Uruguay, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica.

It is worth noting that BYD's North American market is also in layout. The passenger car page of BYD's US official website is being updated, and it is speculated that BYD will announce its entry into the US passenger car market in the next stage.

On the whole, BYD's sea market is involved in both developed and developing countries, and the sea models are still mainly pure electric models of dynasty net, and ocean net models such as dolphins and seals will be launched to foreign markets in the future.

02. Australia is very hot. 600 people apply for experience a day. Since BYD has so much layout in overseas markets, what is BYD's attention overseas?

On August 2 this year, a BYD Atto 3 (right rudder version of the BYD PLUS) was on display at a mall in Brisbane, Australia. It is reported that the booth received more than 600 applications for experience at that time.

Some foreign media also went to experience the car statically. To put it bluntly, BYD Atto 3 has a large number of visitors, and its lively scene is as lively as when Tesla Model 3 was exhibited in the city in 2018.

Then, even because there were too many people, the reporter wanted to go to dinner first and wait until there were few people after lunch before getting on the bus carefully. But it turns out that at least 60 people are still waiting in line an hour later, with the heat unabated.

A video posted on Youtube on Aug. 23 showed that a large number of people came to watch the car, gathered around the car, the seats on the car were crowded with people, and even the front hood was lifted. Everyone around is talking about the car.

On September 2, BYD delivered the first Atto 3 to customers, and the Atto 3 officially launched delivery in the Australian market. The first delivery model is the long-lasting version, and the standard continued version will begin production in China in November 2022.

In terms of models, BYD Atto 3 has launched two models in the Australian market, with a standard continued version starting at A $443,300 (about RMB 208900) and a range of 320km under WLTP conditions, while the long-lasting version costs A $473,000 (RMB 223100) and the WLTP has a range of 420km.

Both models use BYD's lithium iron phosphate blade battery; the battery capacity of the standard continued version is 50.1kWh and the long-lasting version is 60.4kWh.

Currently, BYD has only one Atto 3 model on sale in Australia; in addition, BYD will launch two other new cars in the Australian market (possibly BYD dolphins and BYD seals), which are expected to go on sale in the Australian market in December 2022.

03. The popularity of Yuan PLUS winning 4000 orders in Australia as close as Tesla's car show has also brought a large number of orders to BYD in the Australian market.

In early August, Australian tram dealer EVDirect, BYD's dealership in the Australian market, said it had received more than 4000 orders since the launch of BYD Atto 3 in February.

After BYD announced a 23% reduction in service costs some time ago, daily orders for BYD Atto 3 doubled.

EV Direct's CEO Luke Todd told Australian media: "the daily order volume in the past 48 hours is twice our average daily order before the service charge is reduced; the total number of orders now exceeds 4500."

On September 5, the Australian Federal Chamber of Automobile Manufacturers (FCAI) released new car sales figures for August. A total of 95256 cars were sold in Australia throughout August, and new car sales reached 717575 from January to August this year.

New car sales in ▲ Australia in August

Tony Weber, chief executive of FCAI, said sales of electric vehicles grew brightly in August. "sales of battery electric vehicles were strong in August, with Tesla alone selling 3397 vehicles. Electric vehicles accounted for 4.4 per cent of sales in August, double the same period last year and a record high. Year-to-date, electric vehicle sales account for 2 per cent of the market, hybrid vehicles account for 7.6 per cent and plug-in hybrid vehicles account for 0.6 per cent."

BYD has received more than 4500 orders since it went public in July. If, on a monthly basis, Tesla delivered 3397 units in August, then BYD's single-model sales of 4500 units are impressive.

In August, Tesla Model 3 ranked fourth in new car sales in Australia, behind Toyota Haylax, Ford Explorer and Toyota RAV4, surpassing Toyota Land Cruisers.

According to the latest figures, 2380 Model 3s were delivered to customers in August; in addition, Tesla delivered 1017 Model Ys, giving Tesla a 3.6 per cent share of the entire new car market in Australia in August.

Judging from the sales of new cars in Australia in August, Tesla will become a strong competitor for BYD in Australia. After the BYD seal goes public, it will have a head-on encounter with Tesla Model 3 in the Australian market.

04. The small but hot market in Singapore in July did not officially enter the passenger car market until Atto 3 was listed in Singapore on July 8 this year.

▲ BYD Atto 3 listed in Singapore

According to a report in Singapore's Business Times on July 7, Vantage Automotive, an authorized distributor in Singapore, said that about 300 people had expressed strong interest in Atto 3, enough to account for the number of vehicles BYD exported to Singapore this year.

A source told the The Business Times that BYD had to "adjust" its factory orders, according to industry insiders, meaning cars were more popular than expected.

▲ Singapore's BYD Atto 3 showroom

In Singapore, electric vehicles account for only 0.6% of the market, but the share of electric vehicles as a whole is also growing.

At the beginning of this year, there were fewer than 3000 electric passenger cars on the road, but the number of electric vehicles increased by 1000 between January and May.

From this point of view, although the Singapore market is not large, BYD Atto 3 has obtained more than 300 people's interest orders before it is listed, which can also see the hot selling potential of BYD in the Singapore market to some extent.

05. On July 21 this year, BYD announced its entry into the Japanese passenger car market and launched three models-BYD Atto 3, BYD Dolphin and Seal.

▲ BYD Announces entry into Japanese passenger car Market

Among them, Atto 3 will be launched first and is expected to go on sale in January 2023. BYD dolphins and seals also need to produce right-rudder models, which will go on sale in mid-2023 and the second half of 2023, respectively.

▲ BYD Seal, Atto 3, Dolphin

After entering Asia, Oceania and other developed markets, BYD also set its sights on Europe. Last August, BYD Tang EV began delivery in Norway, and at the end of December last year, BYD announced that Don EV would deliver 1000 vehicles in Norway.

▲ BYD Don EV

"Tang EV has been favored and recognized by users since it was listed in Norway in August last year," said Shu Youxing, general manager of BYD's international cooperation division and European auto sales division. "just last month, Tang EV won the first place in Norway's seven SUV markets."

Specifically, BYD Tang sells for 699,000 kroner (about 435000 yuan) in Norway, while the main competitor is the Tesla Model Y high-performance model, priced at 59.99 million kroner (421000 yuan) and Audi e-tron, 58.3 million kroner (409000 yuan).

Comparison of Norwegian sales of ▲ BYD Tang EV, Model Y and Audi e-tron

Since its launch, BYD Tang EV has sold a total of 2357 vehicles, while Audi e-tron sold 3958 vehicles in the same period, while Tesla Model Y sold the most, with more than 14000 units in the same period.

Although compared with Tesla, there is still a lot of gap, but BYD also continues to layout, want to expand the overseas product layout and increase sales.

▲ 100T EV waiting to be shipped to Norway

In order to expand its visibility in overseas markets, BYD announced that it would participate in the Paris Motor Show in October to showcase its latest passenger car and technology strategy.

BYD is full of confidence about the increase in sales in the European market. According to Lloyd's Daily (shipping authority), BYD will order eight LNG dual-fuel vehicle carriers, each capable of carrying 7700 vehicles, which are expected to be delivered after 2025.

06. Conclusion: in the era of electric power going out to sea by independent car companies, the structure of new energy vehicles is different from that of fuel vehicles. Engines and gearboxes are no longer necessities, so they no longer need to rely on this kind of technology that is choked by international big car manufacturers.

Hybrid and pure electricity have become a new trend, and the new energy products of domestic independent car companies can be exported and sold to the markets of developed countries.

Just take BYD as an example, it has not only become the leading new energy car company in China, but also welcomed abroad.

From this point of view, the wave of electrification has also greatly accelerated the global marketing strategy of independent car companies.
