CTOnews.com, September 9 (Xinhua)-- Ningde Times announced a long-term agreement with BMW Group on September 9 that Ningde Times will supply cylindrical batteries to BMW Group's all-electric vehicles with a "new generation" model architecture, starting from 2025, according to official account.
CTOnews.com learned that under the agreement, Ningde Times will supply BMW with new cylindrical batteries with a standard diameter of 46mm, which will be produced in two battery plants in China and Europe, each with an annual production capacity of up to 20GWh.
Driven by new cylindrical batteries from the Ningde era, BMW's sixth-generation eDrive electric drive technology, which is based on the BMW Group's "new generation" model architecture, is a major leap forward in electric vehicle technology in terms of energy density, charging speed and mileage, officials said.
Based on the common vision of both sides to build a sustainable and recycled battery value chain, the Ningde era of cooperation will give priority to the use of renewable energy electricity and recycled materials to produce high-performance batteries. At the same time, raw materials such as cobalt and lithium for the production of new-generation batteries are purchased only from certified mines.
According to the official account of BMW Group, the new cylindrical cell specially designed for the electronic and electrical architecture of the "new generation" model can increase the battery life by up to 30% (WLTP). Compared with the fifth-generation square cell, the negative electrode of the sixth-generation cylindrical cell contains more nickel, less cobalt and more silicon in the positive electrode, thanks to the fact that the volume energy density of the sixth-generation cell will increase by more than 20%.
The new cylindrical cell has a standard diameter of 46 mm and two different heights. The battery system will play an important role in the body structure of the "new generation" model. According to the different models, the battery will be efficiently integrated into the body structure to reduce the space occupation, thus realizing the perfect integration of the battery and the body. The space required by the original battery module will be greatly optimized.
The voltage platform for the battery, power system and charging technology of the "new generation" model will also be increased to 800 volts, thus optimizing the energy supply of DC fast charging stations. A current of up to 500 amperes can greatly increase the charging power. As a result, the charging time of high-voltage power batteries has been reduced by as much as 30 per cent from 10 to 80 per cent.
At the same time, BMW Group is constantly committed to the further development of the energy storage system. The sixth generation battery technology will also provide for the first time the use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) as the cathode material of choice, thus further avoiding the use of raw materials cobalt and nickel in the cathode material. The company is also promoting the development of solid-state batteries (ASSB), with the goal of applying solid-state high-voltage batteries to production vehicles by 2030.
BMW said that in order to meet the demand for batteries in the "new generation" models, BMW Group has awarded more than 10 billion euros worth of cell production contracts to two partners, CATL and EVE Energy. The two partners will each set up two cell factories in China and Europe, each with an annual capacity of 20 GWh. In addition, BMW will look for partners to build two more cell factories in the North American Free Trade area.
BMW plans to deliver more than 2 million pure electric vehicles worldwide by the end of 2025, BMW officials said. Since the mid-1920s, pure electric "new generation" models will make a significant contribution to BMW Group's sales, and BMW Group will further accelerate the penetration of pure electric models. BMW's pure electric models will account for 50% of its global sales by 2030. At that time, the other three major brands of BMW Group will also be fully electrified: the Rolls-Royce brand will complete the electrification of all its products; the BMW Motorrad urban travel series will be fully electrified; and the MINI brand will also move towards full electrification from the early 1930s, providing customers with zero-emission driving fun.
