Beijing, September 9 (Xinhua) Uber has signed a 10-year cooperation agreement with self-driving startup Nuro, and Uber Eats California customers will soon enjoy self-driving robot services.

In 2019, Uber hoped to use the Nuro driverless dining car to deliver food in Houston, but the two sides did not agree. Now the two companies have finally signed a 10-year cooperation agreement.

Starting this fall, Uber and Nuro will offer unattended room service in Mountain View, Calif., and Houston, Texas. How many unmanned dining cars will be deployed? How many customers are expected to participate in early testing? Neither company has given an answer, but they hope to expand their services to the Bay area of California in the future.

The second-generation R2 food delivery car developed by Nuro is not designed for sidewalks. It is larger, half the size of a compact car, but shorter than most cars. There are no passengers or drivers in the food delivery car, so it can be truly driverless. The R2 dining car can reach speeds of up to 45 kilometers per hour, can carry a weight of 500lbs (about 227KG), and can hold 24 shopping bags in the compartment.

Nuro is currently valued at about $8.6 billion, and in addition to Uber, it is also testing robot delivery services with Serve Robotics and Motional. The Serve Robotics robot drives on the sidewalk, the Motional is tested with a modern electric SUV, and there are two safe drivers in the front row.
