On Wednesday, local time, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced that it had been confirmed by Houston-based Axiom Space to build a moon landing suit for the Artemis 3 mission.

NASA is expected to launch the Artemis 3 mission in 2025 or 2026 to allow astronauts to land on the moon near the South Pole. If all goes according to plan, Artemis 3 will achieve its first manned landing on the moon since the last Apollo mission in 1972. Upon completion of the mission, NASA also plans to continue with the Artemis project, building an outpost on the moon by the end of the 1920s.

"NASA is proud to be working with commercial companies on this mission, which will be the beginning of a US base on the lunar surface," Lara Kearney, manager of the NASA extravehicular activities and Human Spacewalk Program (Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility), said in a statement.

"what we learned on Artemis 3 and a series of missions to the moon will pave the way for a mission to Mars," Kearney added. "spacesuits will really allow us to take the next step."

In June, NASA announced that Axiom Aerospace and Collins Aerospace (Collins Aerospace) would develop and manufacture spacesuits for lunar missions and the International Space Station project. The two private companies can compete for spacesuit contracts totaling up to $3.5 billion by 2034.

NASA plans to make payments through a series of "task orders". The basic value of the Artemis 3 mission lunar spacesuit contract announced on Wednesday is $228.5 million.

"NASA has used more than 50 years of spacesuit expertise to determine the technical specifications and safety requirements of the new generation of spacesuits," NASA officials said. Axiom Aerospace will be responsible for the design, development, identification, certification and production of lunar spacesuits and life support equipment to meet the key requirements of the Artemis 3 mission. "

"NASA experts still have the authority to approve astronaut training, mission planning and service systems," they added. "before the Artemis 3 mission, axiom must test the spacesuit in a space-like environment."

Future spacesuit mission orders will include the follow-up Artemis manned mission, NASA officials said.

NASA has not yet launched the Artemis project, but that should change soon. At present, NASA is preparing for the next launch of the Artemis 1 mission, and plans to use the Space launch system (SLS) rocket to send the Orion spacecraft into lunar orbit and return to Earth smoothly.

NASA tried to launch SLS rockets on August 29 and September 3, but was forced to cancel twice due to technical problems. The exact date of the next launch attempt has not been announced.
