CTOnews.com learned that eSIM is an embedded SIM card, which is called Embedded-SIM in English. ESIM transforms a pluggable physical SIM card into a virtual SIM card, which is embedded directly into the device chip, providing identification for each terminal device and enabling it to access the operator's network.

ESIM can further save space inside the phone and make room for processors, batteries and other components. But eSIM to change the mobile phone number is more troublesome, need to go to the business hall or use another mobile phone to scan the code and other operations can be replaced.

Apple applied for patents related to eSIM as early as 2011, and with the introduction of iPhone XR and XS in 2018, Apple began to introduce eSIM to iPhone. On iOS 16, Apple added support for Bluetooth transmission of eSIM between iPhone.

Chinese mainland's iPhone does not support eSIM at this time. In Hong Kong and Macau, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone SE (Generation 2 and Generation 3), and iPhone XS support eSIM.
