Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for clue delivery! CTOnews.com SiFive, Inc., a leading RISC-V chip designer, announced today that it has been selected by NASA to provide the core CPU for its next-generation High Performance Space Computing (HPSC) processor. HPSC is expected to be used for almost all future space missions, from planetary exploration to missions to the Moon and Mars surfaces, and will be developed under a three-year,$50 million NASA contract with SiFive and Microchip.

HPSC will use an eight-core SiFive Intelligence X280 RISC-V vector core, as well as four additional SiFive RISC-V cores, a 12-core processor SiFive claims to have designed with Microchip to deliver 100 times more computing power than today's space computers. This massive increase in computing power will help usher in new possibilities for mission elements such as autonomous rovers, vision processing, space flight, guidance systems, communications, and other applications.

CTOnews.com understands that this processor is to replace PowerPC's BAE RAD750, which has been launched for more than 20 years and is used in countless spacecraft, including Curiosity and Endurance Mars rovers, as well as the James Webb Space Telescope, so SiFive senior vice president of business development Jack Kang said RISC-V chips will be available for decades to come.

According to SiFive, the RISC-V architecture is one of the most likely infrastructures to have a large number of developers in 10, 15, or even 20 years and become a safe bet for NASA.
