Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com September 6, 9to5 Mac reported that recent OLED iPad screen reports speculate that Apple will use a new type of display. This indicates that OLED iPad will adopt an advanced new double-layer design, and reports that Apple display suppliers Samsung and LG are both working on plans to produce new panels.
Last year, I talked about Apple's display roadmap:
IPS LCD with traditional backlight. This is still used on older Macs and cheaper iPhones.
IPS LCD with miniLED backlight. Apple switched to this panel for iPad Pro models, and it is currently used by new MacBook Pro models as well. Allows for darker blacks and brighter whites and produces amazing contrast differences.
OLED。Apple first adopted this panel in the Apple Watch before introducing it to the iPhone, starting with the iPhone X. Apple hasn't used the panel in an iPad or MacBook yet, but it's expected to be available sometime between 2023 and 2026.
MicroLED。Although the name is similar to miniLED, this is a completely different technology. It's actually a more sophisticated OLED version. Brighter, more power-efficient, and no aging. Apple's interest in microLEDs dates back at least to 2014, and while there have been some signs of progress, the technology is still at a very early stage of development. As with OLED, it's likely to appear first on the Apple Watch, then on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Apple is expected to unveil at least one new iPad model this year-possibly at an October event-but those models are not expected to include OLED models.
A supply chain report last week said Apple was expected to use hybrid glass-polyamide thin film displays on its first OLED iPad.
Flexible polyamide films provide the flexibility required for the small bezels of current iPhone models, as well as other advantages over glass. It is easier to use, cheaper to produce, and lighter. It does have a small risk of "warping," but it is too small to be seen with the naked eye.
The problem arises when you extend it to the larger panels used on the iPad. Warpage will become apparent, so expect Apple to opt for hybrid panels that use a mix of glass and film substrates.
The dual-layer OLED iPad screen, also from The Elec, will also use advanced new OLED technology being developed by Samsung and LG. Called a "double-stacked tandem OLED," it uses two layers of pixels instead of one.
Apple is expected to launch its first OLED iPad in 2024, featuring a two-layer tandem OLED panel.
A single-layer OLED means there is one red, green and blue emitting layer, while a two-layer OLED in series means there is one more layer.
Stacking two RGB emission layers in series improves screen brightness while extending its lifespan, making the technology more suitable for tablets and PCs that last longer than smartphones. "
This technology is compatible with hybrid hybrid panels. CTOnews.com has learned that, like miniLED, the technology will first appear on iPad Pro models.
However, this year's new iPad Pro is expected to continue using IPS LCD screens with miniLED backlighting.
