Mr Musk told shareholders in August that Tesla expected to achieve mass production of 4680 batteries by the end of this year. But Stan Whittingham, the 2019 Nobel laureate and co-inventor of lithium-ion batteries, believes Mr Musk is too optimistic about the time frame for the commercialization of the new technology.

Experts say Tesla can only reduce the battery cost of Model Y by $2000 to $3000, about half of what Tesla expected when he launched the 4680 battery two years ago.
