CTOnews.com, Sept. 6 (Reuters)-Irish data privacy regulators have agreed to impose a record fine of 405 million euros (2.782 billion yuan) on Instagram after investigating its handling of children's data, a spokesman for the Irish data privacy regulator said on September 5 local time.

A spokesman for Meta, the parent company of Instagram, said in an emailed statement that Instagram planned to appeal the fine.

The survey began in 2020 and focuses on child users between the ages of 13 and 17. Instagram allows these child users to operate business accounts, prompting them to disclose their phone numbers and / or email addresses, suspected of violating the EU General data Protection regulations (GDPR).

A spokesman for the Irish data Protection Commissioner (DPC) said: "We adopted the final decision last Friday, which included a fine of 405 million euros. Full details of the decision will be announced next week."

A spokesman for Meta said Instagram updated its settings more than a year ago and has since released new features to ensure the safety of teenagers and the privacy of information. The spokesman said Instagram did not agree with the way the fine was calculated and was carefully reviewing the decision.

CTOnews.com learned that because the EU headquarters of Meta, Apple, Google and other tech giants are based in Ireland, DPC oversees them. The agency has conducted more than a dozen investigations into Meta, including Facebook and WhatsApp.

WhatsApp was fined a record 225 million euros (1.546 billion yuan) last year for failing to comply with EU data rules in 2018.

Irish regulators completed a draft ruling on the Instagram investigation in December and shared it with other EU regulators under the EU's "one-stop" system for regulating large multinationals.
