CTOnews.com, September 4 (Xinhua)-- online retail giant Amazon is shutting down or abandoning plans to open 42 facilities in the United States, with a total available space of nearly 25 million square feet, according to consulting firm MWPVL.

Amazon has also delayed the opening of 21 other locations and cancelled several European projects, particularly in Spain, Bloomberg said.

Earlier, the company announced the closure of two distribution stations in Maryland, which employ more than 300 people.

In July, Amazon reported its slowest growth in more than 20 years, but ended up with better-than-expected results, so the company's shares rose 12% in July, the New York Times reported.

Andy Jassy, Amazon's chief executive, said: "while fuel, energy and transport costs continue to face inflationary pressures, we have made progress on the more manageable costs mentioned last quarter, particularly in improving the productivity of our fulfillment network."

Amazon announced earlier this year that it would start subletting some warehouses because of a slowdown in online shopping.

Alisa Carroll, a spokeswoman for the company, said subletting would allow the company to "reduce the financial responsibility associated with existing warehouses" because existing warehouses no longer meet the company's needs.

Amazon plans to sublease at least 10 million square feet of warehouse capacity and is considering terminating or renegotiating more leases, according to the Wall Street Journal.
