CTOnews.com has learned that Samsung announced on its support page that its US-based systems have suffered a cybersecurity attack. According to Samsung, in late July, an unauthorized third party managed to gain access to personal information about some of the company's customers.

Although Samsung has repeatedly said that "no social security numbers, credit card numbers or debit card numbers have been compromised," it does involve details of some user information, although the information affected may vary from individual to individual. Samsung said third parties may have stolen data such as customers 'names, contact details and demographic information, dates of birth and product registration information.

As for how the company is responding to the data breach, Samsung said it is communicating with customers identified as having been compromised. For now, the company says no immediate action is necessary, but warns users of the need to be vigilant about suspicious phone calls or Web sites requesting personal information.
