Sina Technology News in the afternoon of September 2, Beijing time, it is reported that Facebook parent company Meta and Qualcomm announced at the "Consumer Electronics Show in Berlin" today that they have signed an agreement for Qualcomm to produce custom chipsets for Meta's Quest virtual reality (VR) devices.

Meta and Qualcomm said in a statement that the engineering and product teams of the two companies will jointly produce the chips. The chips will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon (Snapdragon) platform.

The two companies did not disclose financial details of the deal. But the partnership demonstrates Meta's recognition and continued support for Qualcomm technology, although Meta is trying to develop its own custom chips for its planned range of virtual, augmented and hybrid reality devices.

In this regard, Meta spokesman Taylor Yi (Tyler Yee) said that although the chipset produced through this co-production is not unique to Meta, it is specifically optimized for Quest's system specifications. Taylor said that the partnership agreement only covers virtual reality devices, and Meta will continue to work hard to develop some of its own new silicon solutions.

"in some cases, we use off-the-shelf chips or work with industry partners to customize them, but at the same time, we are also exploring our own new chip solutions," Taylor said. "therefore, it is possible to use both partners and custom solutions in the same product. It's all about creating the best meta-universe experience possible."

For years, Meta has relied on Qualcomm chips for its virtual reality devices, including its latest Quest 2 head display. Quest 2 accounts for about 90 per cent of the virtual reality hardware market, according to research firm IDC.

In addition, Meta has invested heavily in technologies such as full-color perspective glasses (pass-through) and augmented reality glasses in an attempt to turn CEO Mark Zuckerberg's "meta-universe" vision into reality.
