CTOnews.com Sept. 2 news, the classic free and open source streaming software OBS Studio released the 28.0official version update yesterday, this version marks the 10th anniversary of the founding of OBS, ushered in a number of important improvements.

Support for HDR and 10-bit colors (Windows, macOS / Linux) can only use AV1 and HEVC encoders to encode HDR and 10-bit colors. 10-bit HEVC coding requires NVIDIA 10 series, AMD 5000 series, or newer GPU. Intel QuickSync and Apple VT are not supported yet.

The recommended settings for HDR are Color Format P010 and Color Space Rec.2100 PQ.

If you want to encode 10-bit SDR, you can use Color Format P010 with SDR color space (for example, Rec. 709 、 Rec. 601). However, AV1 or HEVC is still required.

Currently, only HLS services that support YouTube support HDR streaming through HEVC encoders.

When compositing in SDR, games running in HDR now map correctly to SDR.

If the device supports it, the video capture device can be used to capture and stream HDR (for example, EVGA XR1 Pro, Elgato 4K60 Pro Mk.2, AverMedia Live Gamer 4K).

If the source uses HDR for rendering, some filters will not work: apply LUT, chromaticity keys, color keys, image masks / blends, brightness keys, sharpness

Support for Mac / Linux is limited. The HDR preview does not work and several inputs / encoders still need to be updated.

Upgrade to Qt 6 since May 2020, version 5 of the Qt user Interface Toolkit has stopped public development and is no longer updated. The official version of OBS Studio 28.0 has been upgraded to Qt 6, so some of the older plug-ins for Qt 5 will not be available.

In addition, Qt 6 has abandoned support for Windows 7 and 8, macOS 10.13 and 10.14, Ubuntu 18.04, and all 32-bit operating systems. As a result, these platforms will no longer support OBS Studio 28.0.

Native support for Apple SiliconOBS now has a native build for Apple Silicon systems. This means that OBS will run in a more optimized manner without x86 emulation. Unfortunately, Apple users running native Apple Silicon builds may not have many third-party plug-ins readily available. If users want a wider choice of third-party plug-ins, they can still use the x86 version of OBS, and these third-party plug-ins are not available locally in Apple Silicon.

CTOnews.com learned that the official version of OBS Studio 28.0 also includes a number of feature improvements and bug fixes, which have been released in GitHub, and more fixes can be seen in the log. This version can be downloaded through GitHub or the Beta version of the Steam platform.
