Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! On Thursday, local time, Micron announced that it would invest about $15 billion over the next 10 years to build a new memory chip manufacturing plant in Boysie, Idaho.

Micron said it would be the first new memory chip manufacturing plant in the United States in 20 years and the largest private investment project in Idaho history. The company expects the investment plan to create a total of 17000 jobs by 2030, of which 2000 will be created directly.

Micron said in a press release that the investment ensured the localization of DRAM (dynamic random access memory) and NAND flash memory in the United States. Previously, most of these chips were made in Asia. The memory produced by the new facility will be used in areas such as automobiles, data centers, artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G.

The investment decision was made after President Joe Biden signed the Chip Act, and Micron said incentives provided by Idaho also played an important role.

Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron's chief executive, said: "our new cutting-edge memory chip manufacturing plant will push the US to strive for technological leadership and ensure a reliable domestic supply of semiconductors, which is critical to the economy and national security."

"Micron's move represents another victory for the United States, where we will build electric cars, chips, fiber optics and other key components," President Biden said in a statement. "

Meguiar did not provide details such as the capacity of the new plant or the type of chips it will produce. The expansion comes as Micron cut its fourth-quarter revenue forecast because of weak demand, and its rival Seagate also slashed its forecast for the first quarter.

"Micron is doing what the US government wants, which is to build a manufacturing plant in the US," said Kinngai Chan, an analyst at Summit Insights Group, a market research firm.

Micron plans to invest $40 billion by 2030 to build manufacturing facilities in the United States in stages to support its plants in Virginia, Japan, Singapore and other places. It is estimated that a total of 40,000 jobs will be created under the scheme.
