According to news in the morning of September 2, Beijing time, General Motors' self-driving unit Cruise said on September 1 that the company had recalled 80 self-driving cars and would upgrade their software after a car accident in San Francisco in June that injured two people.

Federal regulators say the software of recalled vehicles may "mispredict" the paths of vehicles coming and going. Cruise says it has now determined that this unusual situation will not happen again after the update.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has stepped up its review of advanced driving assistance systems and self-driving vehicle systems in recent months. Last year, the agency instructed all automakers and technology companies to report accidents involving self-driving vehicles in a timely manner.

NHTSA said on Thursday that the recall application filed by Cruise "to address safety defects in its autopilot software" was required by law.

NHTSA added that it "expects all manufacturers, including those developing autopilot systems, to continuously ensure that they meet the requirements and initiate recalls of any safety issues that pose an unreasonable risk to safety".

NHTSA said the recalled Cruise software could "in some cases cause [autopilot systems] to mispredict the path of another car or underreact to sudden path changes by road users when making unprotected left turns".

Cruise temporarily banned its vehicles from turning left without protection and reduced the area where their vehicles can run after a car accident in San Francisco on June 3, the company revealed on Thursday. After the July 6 software update, Cruise said it had gradually reintroduced unprotected left turns, that is, junctions without special left-turn arrow lights.

In a statement on Thursday, Cruise stressed that all vehicles have received software updates and that the recall "will not affect or change our current highway operations." The company added: "now Cruise's self-driving cars are even better able to prevent this special incident."

"inappropriate autopilot responses can increase the risk of collisions," NHTSA said. " The agency said last month that it had launched a special investigation into the accident in the Cruise self-driving car.

In rare cases, the software causes autonomous vehicles to brake hard when performing unprotected left turns, which the software believes is necessary to avoid severe front-end collisions, Cruise said. Self-driving vehicles "have to decide between two different risk scenarios and choose the one that is least likely to have a serious collision before the oncoming vehicle suddenly changes direction," the company said.

Cruise also pointed out that the police report found that the biggest fault in the June accident was another car, which was driving at a speed of 40 miles per hour in a 25-mile area.

In March, technology startup Xiaoma Zhihang also agreed to recall some versions of its autopilot software, which was used in three cars after a car crash in California in October.

GM has lost nearly $5 billion since 2018 in an attempt to build a self-driving taxi business in San Francisco. The company also disclosed in July that it lost $500m in the second quarter after Cruise began charging rides in a limited area of San Francisco.

GM and Cruise disclosed in February that they had submitted applications to NHTSA to deploy self-driving vehicles on the road without steering wheels, rearview mirrors, turn signals and windshield wipers. Last month, NHTSA said it would extend its public comment period on the request.
