Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Worldcovert for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com Sept. 2, USB Promoter Group today announced the USB4 Version 2.0 standard, which enables data transmission of up to 80 Gbps (10GB/s) over USB Type-C cables.

The specifications for USB Type-C and USB PD will also be updated to achieve higher levels of data performance. All of these specification updates are expected to be released before the USB DevDays series developer event scheduled for November this year.

In addition, USB Promoter Group will update the protocol to achieve higher performance USB 3.2, DisplayPort (DP) and PCI Express (PCIe) performance.

"according to USB tradition, this updated USB4 standard doubles data performance and provides a higher level of functionality for the USB Type-C ecosystem," said Brad Saunders, chairman of USB Promoter Group. "the solutions that benefit most include higher-performance displays, storage and USB-based hubs and docking stations."

The main highlights of the USB4 Version 2.0 standard are as follows:

Up to 80 Gbps of operation, based on the new physical layer architecture, using existing 40 Gbps USB Type-C passive cables and newly defined 80 Gbps USB Type-C active cables.

Update data and display protocols to better take advantage of the increase in available bandwidth.

The USB data schema update now enables the USB 3.2 data tunnel to exceed 20 Gbps.

Update DisplayPort and PCIe standards to comply with the latest specifications.

Backward compatibility with USB4 Version 1.0, USB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3 standards.

CTOnews.com learned that USB DevDays in 2022 will include detailed technical training, covering the latest updates to USB 4, USB Type-C, and USB PD specifications. The USB-IF website (www.usb.org) will hold registration for two scheduled events in Seattle, Washington, USA from November 1 to 2 and in Seoul, South Korea from November 15 to 16.

This update is currently targeted at developers. Brand and marketing guides will be updated in the future, including identification of certified products and certified cables that support USB 80 Gbps.
