CTOnews.com, September 1 (Xinhua)-- Apple's rumored transition to OLED technology for future iPad models may involve the use of Hybrid (hybrid) OLED technology, which combines rigid and flexible OLED panel materials, according to The Elec.

Apple is reluctant to rely entirely on the flexible OLED technology used in the iPhone model because the panel tends to "wrinkle" and the problem becomes more pronounced as the display gets larger, the report said.

CTOnews.com learned that although Hybrid OLED technology is not yet perfect and will take at least a year to be commercially viable and will not be included in OLED iPad until around 2024, it is reported that both Samsung and LG are developing ultra-thin glass substrates with a thickness of only 0.2mm to be used in the technology, which is lower than the current standard of about 0.5mm.

However, the report also said that if the above shortcomings can be overcome, Apple may still choose to use flexible OLED panels in the iPad, but at least for now, Hybrid OLED may be a better choice because they are thinner and cheaper than rigid panels.
