CTOnews.com Sept. 1, according to TheElec, Samsung showed that it transferred its LCD-related patents in the United States to TCL Huaxing in June. Samsung also transferred its patents in South Korea to TCL Huaxing last month, according to sources.

Reported that Huaxing Optoelectronics in the United States, a total of 577 patents were granted, Huaxing Optoelectronics previously acquired Samsung display's LCD factory in Suzhou, China.

Samsung is believed to have sold all of its about 2000 patents related to LCD to third parties in the deal. The recent transfer marks the end of Samsung's display LCD business.

TCL Huaxing is vulnerable to patent lawsuits in the United States because of its relatively few LCD patents, and the latest measures may protect it from future lawsuits. At the same time, Samsung Electronics may also reserve the right to use Samsung display to transfer patents.

CTOnews.com learned that according to previous reports from Korea Times, industry insiders revealed on Sunday that Samsung display had decided to shut down its liquid crystal display (LCD) business in June, making it difficult because of cheaper products made by Chinese competitors and its declining global competitive advantage.

Samsung display will no longer produce LCD for large TV screens, but will focus on organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) and quantum dot (QD) displays. Employees in the LCD business are expected to be transferred to the QD business, while LCD requirements will be purchased from other manufacturers such as TCL Huaxing.
