CTOnews.com August 31, according to MediaTek official news, MediaTek took the lead in the laboratory environment to achieve smartphone access to 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN), setting a new 5G milestone.

According to reports, MediaTek and Rhodes cooperated with Schwartz to simulate data transmission tests to 5G base stations (gNB) on low orbit (LEO) satellite channels, taking the lead in demonstrating the satellite communication support capability based on 5G smartphone hardware.

According to the functions and procedures defined by the 3GPP R175G specification, the test uses MediaTek's mobile communications test chip with 5G NR NTN satellite network function, along with Rhode and Schwartz's low-orbit satellite channel simulator and test base station, to simulate low-orbit (LEO) satellites at 600km altitude and at speeds of up to 27000 km / h in the laboratory.

In this experiment, MediaTek uses the same components as smartphones, demonstrating the feasibility of using 5G NTN technology for satellite communications. 5G NTN technology improves the reliability of global services by making use of the economies of scale of existing mobile communication networks, and helps users to obtain stable 5G connections in areas where there is no service or weak service signal. The technology can not only keep the number of 5G users growing, but also be used in commercial and enterprise applications such as emergency communications, transportation, agriculture, fleet, heavy machinery management and Internet of things equipment.
