Beijing, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) South Korean chipmakers' factory shipments fell for the first time in nearly three years in July, highlighting weak demand for semiconductors, a barometer of the global economy. Prior to this, factors such as the epidemic once led to a shortage of global chip supply, creating an industry boom.

South Korea's semiconductor shipments fell 22.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, compared with a 5.1 per cent increase in June, according to a statement released by South Korea's National Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday. South Korea's national semiconductor inventory remained high in July, up 80 per cent from a year earlier and unchanged from the previous month. Asian manufacturers such as TSMC and Samsung Electronics play an important role in today's global chip supply chain.

Data showed that South Korean chip production slowed for the fourth month in a row in July, indicating that major manufacturers such as Samsung and SK Hynix are adjusting production to reflect cooling demand and increased inventories. With the world economy increasingly dependent on electronic products and online services, semiconductors have become a key component. During the outbreak, in order to minimize the risk of infection, many people turned to telecommuting and distance education, leading to a surge in demand for chips.
