CTOnews.com, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) California lawmakers passed legislation Tuesday requiring all employers who work or hire in the state to publish salary ranges in all job advertisements, according to the Los Angeles Times. The law will also require California-based companies with more than 100 employees to publish their median gender and racial pay disparities for the first time in US states.

The bill will be submitted to Governor Gavin Newsom, who will sign or veto it by September 30. He has not yet taken a position and did not immediately respond to a request for comment. If he signs the law, it will affect some of America's largest companies, including Apple, Google, Meta and other technology giants.

In recent years, more states in the United States have passed a series of transparency laws to combat persistent gender and racial pay disparities.

According to CTOnews.com, women who work full-time earn about 83 per cent of men's, according to the US Census Bureau. The average income of black and Hispanic women is lower than that of their white counterparts.

If Governor Gavin Newsom signs the bill, California will join Colorado, New York City and Washington State to adopt this recruitment policy. Currently, only Colorado laws are in force, and employers in New York City must list salary ranges from November 1. The New York state legislature has passed a similar bill, which is awaiting the signature of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Pay transparency in job postings is just one of many strategies adopted by cities and states to narrow the wage gap. Some cities and states also prohibit employers from asking about the pay of past jobs and penalizing workers who share pay information. Maryland is required to disclose the salary of the job upon request, and Connecticut, Nevada and Rhode Island are required to do so during the recruitment process.
