Jensen Harris said he searched for chrome in the start menu of Windows 11 and was stunned by the pop-up interface. The left side of this window looks like the work of the designer, and on the right it looks like the 2008 IE browser toolbar.

The first thing Jensen Harris blasted was the advertisement for Bing wallpaper on the right side of the window. Although it is an advertisement, the design is too poor. The text is not aligned, with rounded corners on the left, right angles on the right, and even crooked lower left corners.

The ads on Microsoft's Edge browser below take up a lot of space and distract users.

The buttons at the bottom are superimposed on each other and are not even aligned. In addition, the four corners of the large window on the right are also inconsistent, with fillets and right corners.

Jensen Harris says the design is important, the details are important, and the Windows team created a special hyphen in the Segoe UI font to perfectly align the words "S" and "t" with the word "Start" in order to design an important start menu.

Jensen Harris attributes the deterioration in design to lower priorities, saying that Microsoft has a lot of great designers who are very concerned about the work they do, but now Microsoft is more focused on technology than design.

In addition, Jensen Harris believes that the start button is not a good choice, the corner position not only has decades of muscle memory, but also makes perfect use of Fitz's law, making it very easy to aim.

CTOnews.com learned that Fitz's law is often used in the field of product managers, and the formula is MT?=?a+bf (D / W), which means that the time required to move from a starting position to a final goal is determined by the distance D and the target size W, while the Windows start button in the lower left corner allows the user to swing the mouse to the lower left corner at will, and W tends to be infinitely large, which reduces the click time.

However, Windows 11 supports manual setting to the start button in the lower left corner, and you need to select "keep left" in Settings > personalization > Taskbar behavior > Taskbar alignment.
