Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, August 29 (Xinhua) @ Mobile Chip Talent, a digital blogger from Taiwan's chip industry chain, said that TSMC has decided to give up the N3 process because customers, including Apple, are almost unwilling to use it. The development direction will turn to the N3E process, which is mass-produced in the second half of 2023. Because of the high cost of N3, N3E is more cost effective.

In addition, because Apple is not satisfied with the performance of Ibiza, the first project based on N3 technology, Apple has cancelled it, so it is difficult for users to see the end products to build 3nm M3 chips in the short term.

CTOnews.com has reported that Apple has started work on the core design of the M3, which will be released as early as the second half of 2023.

The chip, internally codenamed "Malma", will be mass-produced based on TSMC N3E. Compared to N5, N3 can provide up to 15% performance improvement and up to 30% energy efficiency improvement, and N3E will further widen these differences.

In addition, Apple analyst Guo Mingyi said Apple suppliers will start mass production of new 14-inch MacBook Pro, 16-inch MacBook Pro and iPad Pro models in the fourth quarter of 2022, and all devices are likely to continue to be equipped with 5nm chips.

He said that TSMC, Apple's chip manufacturing partner, will not start shipping 3nm chips until January 2023, so he expects the new MacBook Pro and iPad Pro models to stick with 5nm chips.

It is said that the new iPad Pro with M2 chip is expected to be released in October, but the timing of the release of the new MacBook Pro model is not clear. CTOnews.com has learned that there have been rumors that the new MacBook Pro will be released later this year, but there are also some revelations pointing to the 2023 release.

The new MacBook Pro is expected to be equipped with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips and is expected to remain the 5nm process. In addition to the future Mac and iPad, the A17 Bionic chip in iPhone 15 Pro next year is also expected to carry 3nm chip.

It is reported that TSMC decided to give up the N3 process because the cost is so high that even Apple is not willing to use it.

Guo Mingyi: Apple's new MacBook Pro and iPad Pro are about to be mass produced and are still equipped with 5nm chips.

"it is reported that Apple has launched the core design of the M3 chip: code name Malma, using TSMC N3E enhancement process."
