CTOnews.com, August 29 (Xinhua)-- recently, Germany has begun the era of "hydrogen trains". A number of Coradia iLint hydrogen fuel cell trains have entered passenger service along the 100% hydrogen route in Lower Saxony.

The trial of the passenger service began in September 2018 and lasted nearly two years, when there were only two trains. Now, the project has officially opened the public service and expanded to 14 trains, designed by Alstom engineers at the regional train facility in Salzjit, Germany and the traction system center in Tabu, France. They were purchased by the Lower Saxony Department of Transportation and owned by the state-run Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen mbH (LNVG) Railway Bureau, which began looking for alternatives to diesel locomotives in 2012 and promised to buy only non-diesel (hydrogen fuel cell or battery-powered) trains from now on.

The hydrogen-powered train is produced by France's Alstom, which has been developing hydrogen-powered battery trains since 2013. The train is equipped with hydrogen fuel tanks and batteries. The mode of operation is that the hydrogen emitted from the tank on the roof reacts directly with oxygen in the air to generate electricity, which is then stored in the battery to power the train.

Officials say the car can get the equivalent of 4.5 kilograms of diesel fuel from 1 kilogram of hydrogen fuel. As long as the fuel tank is injected with hydrogen once, it can travel up to 1000 kilometers, with a maximum speed of 140km per hour and a normal speed of 80,120km per hour. Moreover, when the train is running, not only the noise is relatively small, there is no exhaust gas, but only steam and condensed water forms are discharged.

The train will be fueled daily at Linde's hydrogen station in Bremerv ö rde, which has 64 high-pressure (500Bar) gas tanks, six compressors and two fuel pumps. In the future, it is planned to produce hydrogen in the field through "electrolysis and renewable power generation".

It is reported that five Coradia iLints are currently in operation, and the rest are expected to join the fleet by the end of 2022 to replace the 15 diesel trains running on the network, which is estimated to save 1.6 million litres of diesel fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 4400 tons per year.

CTOnews.com learned that Alstom's hydrogen train program did not stop in Lower Saxony, and that the company also signed a contract to provide 27 Coradia iLint hydrogen fuel cell trains for the Frankfurt metropolitan area, 6 Coradia Stream hydrogen trains for the Lombardy region of Italy, and more than a dozen Coradia Polyvant hydrogen trains for different regions of France. The company has also conducted operational tests in Poland, the Netherlands, Sweden and Austria.
