CTOnews.com few days ago, Microsoft pushed the KB5016691 optional update to Windows 11 users, and earlier brought a similar KB5016693 update to Windows Server 2022.

Both of these updates mention Server Message Block (SMB) compression improvements in the logs. Recently, Microsoft's Ned Pyle specifically talked about SMB compression improvements in a blog post.

CTOnews.com learned that SMB compression allows system administrators, users, or applications to transform compressed forms when transferring files over the web. This eliminates the need for compression software to compression-send and then decompress on the target PC. With SMB support, compressed files consume less network bandwidth and reduce transfer times at the cost of slightly increasing CPU usage during transfer.

Ned Pyle said SMB compression behaved in a strange way before KB5016691 and KB5016693 were pushed, using a default algorithm that first tried to compress the first 500MiB of a file (1MiB is 1024KiB), and if the compressible content was above 100 MiB, it compressed the subsequent content. Anything less than 500MiB will not be compressed, even if the compression is very good.

Furthermore, in previous versions, if the algorithm detected a compressible file less than 100MiB during reading of the first 500MiB of a file, then the file would not be compressed even if it was as large as 10GiB.

And after optional updates, SMB compression will compress as many files as possible, removing the previous algorithm restrictions.

CTOnews.com learned that the downside of the improved SMB is that small, less compressible files also consume CPU for compression, such as JPG, ZIP, DOCX.
