Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, August 29 (Xinhua) Samsung display is developing a new quantum dot (QD)-OLED panel, which is thinner than its current commercial version, according to THE ELEC.
This was confirmed by the booth of the Korea Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications (ETRI) during the 22nd International Information display Conference (IMID 2022) in Busan, Korea.
The information shows that Samsung display is working on a QD-OLED panel that removes one of the two glass substrates. The South Korean display maker currently uses two glass substrates on its QD-OLED panels, one for thin-film transistors (TFT) and the other for QD color conversion layers.
ETRI calls the new technology Samsung display is developing as stackable QD-OLED, in which the QD color conversion layer is printed directly on the emitter layer stacked on top of the TFT glass substrate. ETRI confirmed that it is developing the technology with Samsung display and other suppliers and universities.
Removing the substrate will allow Samsung display to reduce production costs and allow their QD-OLED panels to be crimped. However, the technology may not be commercialized until after 2024.
There are currently two televisions with QD-OLED panels, one is the Samsung S95B and the other is the Sony A95K, and Samsung recently announced that it will launch a 77-inch screen to further expand the size range of the QD-OLED TV. CTOnews.com learned that current production capacity and quality rate are problems facing QD-OLED TVs. In July this year, Samsung increased the quality rate of QD-OLED panels to 85%, a significant improvement from the 50% in November last year, but still lagged behind LG's WOLED panels with a yield of about 93%. In August, market research company Display Supply Chain Consultant (DSCC) predicted that the cost of manufacturing QD-OLED panels displayed by Samsung next year will be 20-25% lower than this year, and there will be good changes in the production and price of QD-OLED TVs in the future.
