CTOnews.com, August 28 (Xinhua)-- Apple Apple Watch Series 3 is expected to stop production in September, and the device will not be upgraded to run the latest version of watchOS 9 software, which means potential customers should no longer buy the device, according to MacRumors.

Apple Apple Watch Series 3 was released in September 2017 and has been around for nearly five years. It is the oldest device to support watchOS 8, but its S3 chip lags behind Apple Watch SE's S5 chip and Apple Watch Series 7's S7 chip in performance. The Apple Watch Series 3 is also the only remaining Apple Watch with an older, thicker design, with large borders and corners around the display.

CTOnews.com learned that after last year's iOS 14.6 and watchOS 7.5 updates, Apple Watch Series 3 users had to unpair and re-pair their devices from their linked iPhone when updating watchOS because Apple Watch did not have enough internal storage to complete the update independently.

In June, Apple previewed Apple Watch's next-generation operating system, watchOS 9. The new operating system no longer supports Apple Watch Series 3, which means that the device will continue to run "watchOS 8". Still, Apple Watch Series 3 is still on sale. Apple is expected to stop production of the device when it announces a new Apple Watch model at next month's iPhone 14 / Pro launch event.

On the contrary, users who want to buy entry-level Apple Watch models can look forward to Apple Watch SE 2. Apple Watch SE made its debut in 2020 and is a low-cost choice for customers. It has been nearly two years since its launch, and Bloomberg Mark Gurman and analyst Guo Mingyi and others expect Apple Watch SE 2 to be released with Apple Watch Series 8 next month.

Bloomberg Mark Gurman predicts that the Apple Watch SE 2 may be equipped with a S8 chip. It is reported that the S8 chip will have the same specifications as the S6 and S7 chips, which may explain why Apple can upgrade Apple Watch SE 2 to its latest processor. In fact, since all chips that are newer than Apple Watch SE processors are virtually the same, there is no essential difference between S6, S7 or S8-all of which provide a modest performance improvement over S5 chips.
