CTOnews.com learned that the Chinese Sky Eye is the "500Aperture spherical Radio Telescope" of the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, or FAST, which is a major infrastructure of the Eleventh five-year Plan. It was completed and opened in Pingtang, Guizhou Province on September 25, 2016. It is still the largest and most sensitive single-aperture radio telescope in the world, located in Dawodu Town, Pingtang County, Guizhou Province.

Chinese Sky Eye adopts a brand-new design concept, breaks through the aperture limit of traditional telescopes, and builds the largest 500-meter radio telescope in history, which covers some scientific research fields at the front of middle and low frequency.

Chinese Sky Eye officially passed the national acceptance on January 11, 2020, and its sensitivity was more than 2.5 times that of the second largest radio telescope in the world at that time, equivalent to at least 2.5 times higher than other single-aperture radio telescopes in China. It is a radio telescope with absolute sensitivity advantage.

In March last year, FAST was officially opened and shared to the world, demonstrating the concept of cooperation between Chinese scientists and the international scientific community. By January this year, we had more than 600 scientific users in 45 research institutions in 15 countries.

Jiang Peng said: due to the late start in the field of radio astronomy in China, the key issues in the field of radio astronomy are mainly receivers. In the future, FAST will be used as a platform, combined with the efforts of the technology research and development team, to solve core technical problems and develop advanced receiver systems within five years.

In addition, FAST has carried out the development of pulsar timing system and advanced receiver system. In the future, FAST will also go deep into the scientific research of pulsar search, rapid radio storms, neutral hydrogen patrol, interstellar formation and gravitational wave detection.

So far, the 500-meter spherical radio telescope, known as the "Chinese heavenly eye", has discovered more than 660 new pulsars, CCTV reported. FAST staff said: "at present, 'Chinese Heavenly Eye' has entered a period of explosive results."
