CTOnews.com, August 28, when Intel released the core design of Alder Lake CPU architecture, the company said that Windows 11 has been optimized for this large and small core design, and the latest Thread Director technology to help task scheduling, so the measured performance is better than Linux and Windows 10.

Since then, the Linux system has been further optimized, with changes made at the bottom to narrow the gap with Windows 11. CTOnews.com previously reported that the latest tests on Ubuntu using Linux kernel version 5.18 show that the performance of Alder Lake-S Core i9-12900K on Linux is not much different from that on Windows 11.

Recently, Ricardo Neri, an Intel Linux engineer, submitted a new patch to the Linux kernel, which mainly improves the task scheduling between P core (performance core) and E core (energy efficiency core).

On processors with a mix of higher-frequency SMT cores and lower-frequency non-SMT cores, such as Intel hybrid processors, if multiple SMT peer processors are busy, the lower priority CPU extracts tasks from the higher priority kernel.

Do not use a different priority for each SMT sibling. Instead, adjust the asym_packing load balancer to identify SMT kernels with multiple busy siblings and let the low-priority CPU pull tasks.

Removing these artificial priorities avoids redundant migrations and allows the low-priority kernel to check all SMT siblings for the busiest queues.

In addition, Intel's upcoming 13-generation Raptor Lake and future 14-generation Meteor Lake CPU are expected to adopt a similar hybrid architecture, so optimizations for Linux will see results in future generations.
