The space company Blue Origin participated in the development of the "Orbital Reef" (Orbital Reef), which is feasible in the overall design and approved to enter the design stage.

Commercial aerospace company Sierra Space (Sierra Space) is the main partner of the Orbital Reef commercial space station, with other partners including Blue Origin, Boeing, Amazon and Arizona State University.

"the development of orbital reefs has been promoted through system design reviews," Brent Sherwood, senior vice-president of Blue Origin, said in a statement. "We are trying to meet the needs of the commercial market and NASA. Orbital reefs will change the rules of the game for humans to fly in space in Earth orbit."

The orbital reef is designed to open up a number of new space markets and provide opportunities for everyone to gain a foothold in orbit. The Orbital Reef Space Station will provide cost-competitive point-to-point services to customers in research, industry, commerce and other fields, including space transportation and logistics, space residence, equipment retention and operation, and long-term crew residence.

Blue Origin, backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos (Jeff Bezos), will focus on public systems on orbital reefs, large-diameter core modules and reusable new Glenn heavy rocket launch systems, while Sierra Space will focus on large integrated flexible environment (LIFE) modules, node modules and the Dreamchaser space shuttle that can land on airport runways, which can be used to transport crew and cargo.

At the same time, Boeing will be responsible for the science module of the orbiting Reef space station, the space station operating system, maintenance engineering and interstellar manned spacecraft. Redwire is responsible for the research, development and manufacture of microgravity systems and the development of payload operations and deployable structures, while Genesis is responsible for building single-man spacecraft for the daily operation of the space station and short-haul space tourism.

In the process, Amazon will rely on logistics expertise to simplify transportation and inventory management between Earth and orbital reefs, and support services and technical tools for human life and work in space through Amazon Web Services. Arizona State University provides research and consulting services and is responsible for public promotion.

It is reported that this "multi-function commercial space station" is expected to be put into use in 2027.

Last December, NASA awarded Blue Origin $130 million through the Commercial low Earth orbit Development (CLDP) project to develop the Orbital Reef Commercial Space Station.

In addition, Axiom Space will launch several modules to the International Space Station from 2024 to form its own space station after the final separation of the International Space Station.
