CTOnews.com, August 26 (Xinhua)-- Tim Farrar, a satellite communications consultant for Telecom and Media and Finance Associates, an American research company, said Apple will announce its long-rumored iPhone 14 satellite connection next month.

Apple will hold a media conference at the Steve Jobs Theater on Sept. 7, which claims that the "Far Out" and starry art background used in the slogan are likely to hint at the functional features of satellites.

Farrar tweeted that the satellite connection announcement released by T-Mobile and SpaceX yesterday is likely to pre-empt Apple's announcement of its own iPhone satellite connection feature in partnership with Globalstar.

CTOnews.com learned that in February this year, Globalstar announced that it had bought 17 new satellites to provide "continuous satellite services" to "potential customers".

Farrar said Apple's satellite communications service will only provide free two-way text messages at launch and will use existing satellite spectrum to bypass FCC rules.

By contrast, T-Mobile and SpaceX plan to leverage T-Mobile 's if 5G spectrum and support SMS text messaging, MMS and selective messaging applications, so Farrar believes this more difficult approach will face global regulatory hurdles.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman first reported in December 2019 that Apple was developing a satellite connection service for iPhone, but it did not appear in the iPhone 13 series.

Earlier this year, Goolman said Apple was still developing the feature and said it might be ready for iPhone 14 later this year.

Gurman said the feature was intended for "emergencies" and allowed iPhone users to alert authorities and send text messages to emergency contacts, adding that the feature could also be used on the new Apple Watch.

Gurman said iPhone needs a special modem chip to connect to the satellite, suggesting that the feature may only be compatible with iPhone 14 and later. By contrast, T-Mobile says the "vast majority of smartphones" already on its network will be able to connect to SpaceX's satellites using its existing cellular chips.

Other details about Apple's rumored satellite connection feature, such as whether it is available only in a small number of markets such as the United States, or for global users, is still unknown. We will also have a full basis for all the contents of Apple's event in the future, please look forward to it.
