CTOnews.com, August 26, according to Bloomberg, each of ASML's new generation EUV lithography machines consumes about 1 million watts of power, about 10 times that of previous generations of equipment, and is expected to account for 12.5% of the total energy consumption in Taiwan Province of China in 2025. The chip industry may become an important stumbling block to reducing global carbon emissions.

According to Taiwan's Economic Daily, in response to foreign media reports that TSMC is developing advanced manufacturing processes and consuming a lot of electricity, the company quoted the 2020 Industrial Science and Technology International Institute for Strategic Development (ISTI) model derivation and analysis results, saying that for every kilowatt-hour of production used by TSMC, it can save four kilowatt-hours of electricity worldwide.

TSMC said that the company continues to promote advanced semiconductor process technology to produce more advanced, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly products. In addition, the company actively invests in green manufacturing and implements actions related to energy conservation and carbon reduction, including efforts to optimize the energy efficiency of the process, while working with machine equipment manufacturers to develop new energy-saving action plans.

CTOnews.com learned that the environmental impact of TSMC production mainly depends on the source of power generation.

Industry insiders point out that Taiwan has many chip factories that need to run such energy-intensive equipment, making renewable energy important and urgent, but Taiwan province relies heavily on fossil fuels.

It is worth mentioning that Taiwan set a goal in 2016 to make 20% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025. However, according to the latest energy review in July, only 6 per cent of electricity came from renewable sources by the end of 2021, prompting it to lower its 2025 target to 15 per cent.

Overall, although there is an opportunity to find a more environmentally friendly way to make chips, no manufacturer is willing to slow down.
