CTOnews.com, Aug. 25 (Xinhua)-- California's air regulator is expected to issue a measure on Thursday to ban the sale of new fuel cars by 2035 and set a temporary target to gradually ban fuel vehicles from the road, according to the Associated Press.

Starting in 2026, 35 per cent of new passenger cars, SUV and small pickups sold in California will have to be zero-emission vehicles. This proportion will increase year by year, reaching 51% of all new car sales by 2028, 68% of all new car sales in 2030, reaching 100% in 2035 (and only 20% of zero-emission car sales are allowed to be plug-in hybrids).

The California Air Resources Commission will vote on the policy on Thursday, which sets out the country's most aggressive roadmap for phasing out gasoline-powered cars. However, it did not ban these vehicles. People can continue to drive gasoline cars and buy used cars after 2035.

In addition, the plan allows 1/5 of sales after 2035 to be plug-in hybrid cars that can run on batteries and gasoline.

Climate officials in California say the state's new policy will be the most ambitious in the world because it sets a clear benchmark for increasing sales of electric vehicles over the next decade. For example, by 2026, 1/3 of new cars sold must be electric vehicles. About 16% of cars sold in California in the first three months of this year were electric.

The European Parliament supported a plan in June to effectively ban the sale of gasoline and diesel cars in 27 groups of countries by 2035, while Canada also stipulated the sale of zero-emission cars in the same year. China's Hainan province said this week that it would take the same measures by 2030.

Mary Nichols, former chairman of the California Air Resources Council, says that even in California, long distances to drive electric cars require careful planning of where to park and recharge.
