CTOnews.com, August 25, today, Intel announced the launch of the data center GPU Flex series, which accelerates intelligent vision cloud applications, providing better media transcoding throughput performance and supporting up to 68 real-time cloud game streams.

Intel said that the Flex series GPU can meet the requirements of image quality, deployment density and latency. Based on the integration of AV1 encoder, Flex series data center GPU can provide better media transcoding throughput performance and decoding throughput performance. It also achieves more than 30% bandwidth growth and reduces the total cost of ownership. At the software level, it widely supports mainstream media tools, API, frameworks, and the latest codecs.

Based on Intel's Xe-HPG micro-architecture and supported by a wide range of hardware vendors and software developers in the ecosystem, the Intel data center GPU Flex family provides flexible scalability between CPU and GPU for AI reasoning workloads in scenarios such as media analytics, smart cities, medical imaging, and so on.

CTOnews.com learned that the Intel data center GPU Flex series will first provide media processing and transmission as well as Android cloud gaming-related capabilities.

In terms of media processing and delivery, the media architecture of the Flex series GPU includes four Xe media engines focused on meeting the needs of modern data centers for high-density video streams:

A single card can support 1080p60 transcoding throughput of up to 36 video streams.

A single card can support the 4K60 transcoding throughput of 8-channel video streams.

When expanded to a 10-card configuration in a 4U server, it can support HEVC-HEVC 1080p60 transcoding throughput of up to 360 video streams.

Flex series GPU open source hardware-based AV1 encoders can save more than 30% of bandwidth. The media engine of the Flex series GPU also supports and improves the performance of codecs widely used in the industry, including HEVC, AVC, and VP9.

With the Intel Deep Link super coding feature, the Intel data center GPU Flex Series 140 can be equipped with two sets of codec devices on a single card to meet the industry's "one second delay" requirements while providing 8K60 real-time transcoding. This feature applies to AV1 and HEVC HDR formats.

In terms of Android cloud games, Intel claims that the Flex series GPU can bring a smooth gaming experience on a variety of devices, which has been verified in nearly 90 popular Google Play Android games.

A single Flex Series 170 GPU can support up to 68 720p30 streams, while a single Flex Series 140 GPU can support up to 46 720p30 streams (based on game-specific test results).

It can support up to 216 720p30 streams when extended with 6 Flex series 140 GPU.

Intel pointed out that global system providers, including Dell Technology Group, HPE, Xinhua III, Tide, Lenovo and Ultra Micro, will launch systems with Flex series GPU. In the coming months, solutions with Flex series GPU will be available one after another, starting with media delivery and Android cloud gaming workloads. Then there will be systems and solutions for Windows cloud games, artificial intelligence, and virtual desktop infrastructure workloads.
