The agency cut its forecast for chip market growth this year to 13.9 per cent from 16.3 per cent. In addition, the agency expects chip sales to grow by just 4.6 per cent in 2023, the slowest pace since 2019.

In early August, figures released by the semiconductor industry association showed that global chip sales exceeded $150 billion in the second quarter of this year, up 13.3 per cent from a year earlier and 0.5 per cent month-on-month. But in the last month of the second quarter, global chip sales fell 1.9 per cent from a month earlier to $50.8 billion, with year-on-year growth falling below 15 per cent for the first time since February 2021.

Since the second half of 2020, the shortage of chips has become the main theme of the semiconductor industry. In addition, affected by the epidemic, manufacturers around the world have been scrambling for orders and production capacity, so the orders in the chip market have increased significantly, and the revenue of chip manufacturers has repeatedly reached record highs.

However, in the context of increased uncertainty about the global economic outlook, customer inventory increases, demand decreases, and chip sales begin to cool down. Foreign media said that the cooling rate of chip sales will exceed previous expectations.

Last week, industry insiders revealed that revenue for many chip design companies is likely to continue to decline in August and September as major customers' inventories continue to adjust.
