Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, August 23 (Xinhua) in the second quarter of 2022, strong resistance from both supply and demand led to the second consecutive quarter of decline in PC shipments in Western Europe, while total shipments of laptops and desktops plummeted to 12.3 million units, down 18 percent from a year earlier, according to a report by Canalys Research Institute. Laptop shipments were the hardest hit, with shipments falling 26 per cent year-on-year to 9.5 million units. Desktops, by contrast, performed much better, with rising business demand driving shipments of the category up 22 per cent year-on-year to 2.7 million units in the second quarter of 2022. The performance of tablets in the consumer market is relatively weak, shrinking 24% to 5.9 million units compared with last year.
The main reason for the low shipments in the second quarter is that major regions and cities in China have been blocked for most of the quarter, resulting in severe disruption of the supply chain. The blockade, which has been in place for almost the whole quarter, has seriously blocked the operation of factories and ports along the Beijing-Shanghai corridor. Although production began to recover at the end of May, the rebound hardly made up for a poor start to the quarter. After the problem of late delivery of orders, manufacturers face severe macroeconomic resistance, as rising inflationary pressures force consumers to cut spending.
In addition to unprecedented supply problems in the second quarter of 2022, growing inflation has also affected consumer demand for personal computers in Western Europe, Canalys said. Inflation in the eurozone averaged about 8 per cent in the second quarter, according to a report by Eurostat, the EU's statistics department. Rising energy costs caused by the war in Ukraine are the main culprit of inflation. In June, energy prices in the euro zone rose 42% from a year earlier. In this inflationary environment, a major shift is taking place in the consumer and business sectors. Many users had to postpone buying new equipment because of tight household budgets, resulting in a 34% drop in desktop and laptop shipments in the second quarter. In sharp contrast, at the end of the epidemic, the economies of European countries began to recover, and enterprises returned to work and mixed working methods, so that the demand for high-quality equipment was still relatively strong. Shipments of non-educational business personal computers fell slightly by 3%. Large enterprises with strong financial strength are still willing and able to update their employees' equipment and upgrade their office IT infrastructure. Despite the deteriorating economic situation, PC makers with strong channel relationships that focus on providing commercial products and related services will perform better in the region.
Lenovo remains the preferred brand for desktops and laptops in Western Europe. Although shipments of the brand fell 8 per cent to 3.8 million units in the second quarter of 2022, it was still the best performer of the top five, with market share up more than 3 per cent year-on-year compared with a year ago. Hewlett-Packard and Dell fell 17% and 18% respectively in the second quarter. Hewlett-Packard firmly ranked second with 3 million units shipped, while Dell ranked third with 1.7 million. Apple suffered the biggest decline among the top five due to high price positioning and production disruptions in China, with shipments of less than 800000 units in the second quarter, down 42 per cent from the same period last year. Acer rose to fourth place for the first time since the second quarter of 2021, but also saw a sharp drop of 30 per cent, with shipments of just over 1 million units.
CTOnews.com learned that despite a 20 per cent year-on-year drop in shipments in the second quarter to 2.2 million units, Apple remained the largest tablet maker in western Europe for eight consecutive quarters. Samsung's market share grew significantly by 4 per cent in the second quarter, with total shipments of 1.3 million units. Lenovo and Huawei, ranked third and fifth, were the two hardest hit brands in the second quarter of 2022, falling 38 per cent and 56 per cent, respectively, while Amazon ranked fourth with a relatively modest 7 per cent decline.
