CTOnews.com August 23 news, according to the "Times" reported that the French government has increased the size of subsidies for people who exchange gasoline cars for electric bicycles, up to 4000 euros (about 27280 yuan) per person, in order to encourage people to give up polluting modes of transportation and choose cleaner, more environmentally friendly alternatives.

People from low-income families living in low-emission urban areas in France are eligible for a € 4000 subsidy to buy electric bikes if they replace their car (traditional non-motor vehicles are also eligible for the award).

CTOnews.com understands that France first introduced such subsidies last year and has recently increased them. The French government says it wants 9 percent of the country to cycle by 2024, up from 3 percent now. The Dutch figure in this area is as high as 27%, and the French government hopes to catch up with the Netherlands in this regard.

The policy is modelled on a highly successful scheme in Lithuania in which citizens qualify for subsidies of up to 1000 euros (about 6820 yuan) to buy a new electric bicycle, scooter, moped, motorcycle and public transport points after exchanging used cars.

But France isn't just spending money on personal subsidies. The government has said it will invest 250 million euros (about 1.705 billion yuan) to make Paris fully bicyclist. Mayor Anne Hidalgo, who won re-election last year, promised to add another 130 kilometers of safe bike lanes over the next five years.
