CTOnews.com, August 21 (Xinhua)-- hardware collector and critic YuuKi-AnS posted a picture of Intel's abandoned 10nm Cannon Lake-Y CPU, which is designed with three cores and a small overall size with the words "Special Samples" on it.

Intel's Cannon Lake architecture was launched in 2018 and discontinued less than two years later, making it the shortest-lived CPU architecture in the company's history.

As you can see from the figure, the obsolete Cannon Lake-Y CPU is a 3-die MCP (multi-chip processor), packaged in BGA1392, with a size of 28mm x 16.5mm, that is, 462mm ².

According to the exposed data, there are three core particles on the package. The 10nm CPU chip is the largest of the three, with a size of 70.52 mm ², followed by a PCH chip with a size of 46.17 mm ², and finally a McIVR chip with a size of 13.72 mm ².

McIVR (multi-chip integrated voltage regulator) is used to handle voltage regulation between two cores, but Intel later switched to fully integrated voltage regulation FIVR. You can see how small the size of this CPU is from the motherboard in the picture below.

CTOnews.com learned that Intel's 10nm Cannon Lake architecture only officially launched one product, the i3-8121U, which was once included in a Lenovo notebook and Intel NUC, and the CPU has 2 cores, 4 threads, 2.2-3.2GHz, and even no check.

In 2020, another Cannon Lake architecture CPU-m3-8114Y was exposed, with 2 cores and 4 threads, main frequency 1.5GHz, equipped with Gen 10 core display, and its running score was slightly higher than that of m3-7Y30 in 14nm process.
