Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, August 21 (Xinhua)-- Florida police have disclosed the history of a case in which Apple AirTag was used to search for a suspect.
An airline subcontractor was arrested this month on suspicion of stealing $16000 (109400 yuan) worth of luggage at an airport in Florida.
Giovanni De Luca, who lives in Mary Esther, has just turned 19 and is charged with two counts of grand larceny, a felony, according to a press release from the Ocarusa county sheriff's office.
Recently, two holiday AirTag users in the United States suffered a loss of luggage. Their luggage, which was scheduled to arrive in July and August, did not arrive on time. The holidaymakers' luggage contained nearly $17000 worth of items and jewelry.
The security department of the Okalusa County Police Department was aware of the problems at D'Estaing-Fort Walton Airport and launched an investigation. One passenger said her luggage contained items worth more than $1600, but it was not delivered to her, so her luggage was marked as lost or stolen by the police.
Fortunately, the victim said she had an Apple AirTag in her suitcase, which was last displayed in Mary Esther.
According to the description of the local police, immediately after receiving the report of the theft of luggage, the police cross-checked with the airport staff living in the area and found that the airport staff may have committed the crime, so they quickly contacted the suspect and investigated.
According to OCSO, investigators found DeLuca's residence, and police officers found items reported missing on August 9 on August 10. DeLuca is also said to have admitted rummaging through the suitcase of the first victim.
DeLuca later admitted the theft and mentioned that the AirTag in the luggage was found and abandoned during the search, but in the end he did not avoid being pursued by the police. Although not all the lost items were recovered this time, the AirTag still had the effect of assisting the police in solving the case.
Officials say DeLuca is charged with two counts of major larceny, which are felonies in Florida. If convicted, he could face five to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10000.
Although Apple AirTags can lead police to suspects, they can also be abused by criminals to invade the privacy of victims, a trend known as "AirTag tracking", according to local police departments. However, these devices do bring security to users, such as the ability to determine when AirTag is separated from its owner.
CTOnews.com learned that Apple's AirTag, which was released in April 2021, is a very small device that Apple describes as "a super-easy way to track your stuff." Users can put them with their phones, keys, and even wallets, and then track their items through the find app.
