CTOnews.com August 21, JetBrains announced on August 18 that the source code of the IntelliJ project has recently been migrated to Java 17.

Officials say they still compile some modules to be compatible with older versions of Java, so they can support running users' projects under these versions. However, most platforms and plug-in modules now use Java 17, and all upcoming 2022.3 versions of IntelliJ-based IDE require Java 17 to launch.

For developers:

If you are developing plug-ins, you can use the new language features and API in Java 17, but only if the since-build property in plugin.xml is set to 223.

If your plug-in distribution needs to run on multiple versions of IDE, such as 2022.3 and 2022.2, you must continue to use Java 11.

If you want to compile the intellij-community project, just call the Build Project operation. IntelliJ IDEA will recommend that you automatically download JetBrains Runtime 17 and set it as the project JDK.

CTOnews.com learned that IntelliJ-based IDE supported Java 17 as early as last year, and this official project migration means that the new version will require the use of Java 17.
