CTOnews.com, August 21 (Xinhua) more than 1/3 of newly registered taxis in South Korea in the first seven months of this year were electric vehicles, according to data from South Korea's Ministry of Land and Transport.
South Korean taxis operated 7394 newly registered electric vehicles from January to July, according to Ministry of Transport data analyzed by the CarIsYou data center. This is equivalent to 36.4 per cent of the 20296 newly registered taxis in the same period. In the past decade, the number of electric taxis has been increasing.
CarIsYou points out that individuals prefer electric cars to taxis to companies. Of these newly registered electric taxis, 86.8% are individuals and 13.2% are taxi companies.
In 2013, there were no registered electric taxis in South Korea. But that number rose from 9 in 2014 and 54 in 2015 to 1029 in 2019 and then almost quintupled to 4993 in 2021.
In terms of models, Hyundai's flagship Ioniq 5 is the most popular electric taxi in South Korea, with 3453 newly launched, followed by Kia EV6 (2434) and Hyundai Niro EV (1702). Hyundai's luxury brand Genesis has two G80 models and one GV70 model used as electric taxis.
