CTOnews.com, August 21, the team behind the Pixelmator series of image editing applications recently announced that Pixelmator Photo applications for iPhone and iPad are moving to subscription-based pricing and have been updated on App Store.

For new users, Pixelmator Photo now charges $4.99 a month or $23.99 a year, while existing users of the app will continue to have "unlimited access" without having to pay again. The lifetime purchase option will remain at $59.99 (about 410.33 yuan), which is much more expensive than the one-time price of $7.99 before Pixelmator Photo.

In a blog post, the Pixelmator team acknowledged that the subscription-based pricing model was more expensive, but argued that there were "some considerable problems" with the early pricing model, including slow development and focusing on new users rather than existing ones. Pixelmator pointed out, among other reasons, that App Store does not allow paid apps to offer free trials or upgrade discounts for major new versions.

Pixelmator said: "We hope that enough users will use the app on a regular basis and that it is worthwhile to adopt an annual or monthly fee." This seems to be the best way to ensure that Pixelmator Photo continues to evolve for a long time to come.

CTOnews.com learned that Pixelmator also provides a preview of the Pixelmator Photo application for Mac, which will be a "completely native application designed entirely for Mac". Pixelmator plans to release the app by the end of this year or early next year, and says users who now subscribe to Pixelmator Photo for iPhone / iPad will get it for free when Pixelmator Photo for Mac is released. Existing users will be eligible for discount subscriptions.

Pixelmator said it has no plans to immediately switch to subscription-based pricing for the standard version of Pixelmator for iOS or Pixelmator Pro for macOS, and is in the process of making a major update to Pixelmator Pro, which will remain free.
