CTOnews.com, August 21 (Xinhua)-- Stage Manager in Apple's iPadOS 16 Beta has been severely criticized for iPad's new multitasking and poor experience, with some calling it a "fundamental mistake" and even calling on Apple to delay the release and improve the feature.

Federico Viticci, founder and editor-in-chief of MacStories and a prominent member of the Apple community, outlined his disappointment with iPad's pre-stage scheduling in a Twitter post earlier this week. Viticci said the built-in design decisions for front-end scheduling were "fundamentally wrong", arguing that the feature was unstable, difficult to use, and that there were user interface failures in the experience.

"if front-end scheduling is the future of iPadOS for professional users, I hope Apple understands that it cannot be done in haste. We have been waiting for this for several years, but it is better to launch it in the spring of 2023," Viticci said, suggesting that Apple delay the release of front-end scheduling and reconsider its approach.

Front-end scheduling allows users to overlap windows and use external monitors on their iPad for the first time. However, Apple's implementation of this feature is not as clear as some people had hoped.

IPad enthusiasts have been eager for the company to make better use of the power and multitasking potential of iPad, and pre-stage scheduling is Apple's response to these calls. When Apple introduced the M1 Apple Silicon chip to iPad Pro in April 2021 and iPad Air last fall, there was a major leap forward around iPadOS and its inability to make full use of iPad hardware.

The pre-stage scheduling design is only suitable for iPad with M1 chip and update, which makes this function more and more controversial. Apple believes that only the unified memory architecture of the M1 chip originally designed for Mac can support the heavy work required for front-stage scheduling.

"with technologies such as display scaling and virtual memory swapping, we have laid the foundation for a huge leap in the user experience, which can change the way the user experience is done," Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering at Apple, said on WWDC in June. "our Pro users can do their work on iPad."

CTOnews.com learned that pre-stage scheduling is one of the few new features of iPadOS 16, but it also exists in macOS 13 Ventura. Although they have the same name and the same basic idea, the implementation of front scheduling on iPadOS 16 and macOS 13 Ventura is quite different.

For example, as Viticci pointed out in its early overview of iPadOS 16, Apple is seeking to reduce the heavy workload that Mac users often face, namely the need to perfectly locate overlapping Mac windows to create an ideal workspace. With pre-stage scheduling on iPadOS 16, the system automatically moves applications to keep the main application in use in the center of the "stage", while other applications are "gracefully moved aside" when they are opened.

The idea behind front-end scheduling is that users will get a system that wants to help maintain the benefits of overlapping windows while providing users who don't like overlapping windows with tools that can ease some of the pain behind window management.

The front scheduling is also responsible for automatically following the "central application", where users can choose to hide or show the Dock bar on the left and recent applications. If you keep the Dock bar, users will be able to quickly drag new windows into the workspace. "

Viticci shared two feedback reports he submitted to Apple on pre-stage scheduling on Twitter, which is still under testing. First, he proposed an easy way to move windows from the iPad to an external display, because it is not yet possible to do so. Another feedback report outlines how the system "destroys" the application's workspace when connected to an external monitor.

In response to the latter report, Apple said it was "acting as expected" and Viticci said it was "puzzling". As for another suggestion that it is easier to move windows and space to an external display, Apple said after "careful consideration" that it would not continue to implement it.

According to revelations, unlike the precedents of the past few years, Apple plans to release iPadOS 16 in October this fall, rather than expected to launch with iOS 16 in September. The delay in the release of iPadOS 16 should give Apple plenty of time to address concerns about pre-stage scheduling.

Apple is unlikely to remove the front-stage scheduling feature when iPadOS 16 is released, although it can choose to mark it as a Beta feature until the problem is resolved and improved. Just like the general control in macOS Monterey.

"it is revealed that the official release of Apple iPadOS 16 has been postponed to October, while the official release of iOS 16 is still available in September."

"Apple executives said they had tested iPadOS 16" pre-stage scheduling "on non-M1 iPad, which did not meet the satisfactory requirements.
